Billings Ovulation Method
The Billings Ovulation Method was developed in the 1950s when Dr. John Billings began discovering the predictable and scientific relationship between a woman’s cervical mucus and the survival of sperm in the reproductive tract. In the 1960s, Dr. Billings began further developing the method with another physician, Dr. James Brown, who also developed some of the first tests for measuring estrogen and progesterone levels in the blood. In this method, a woman uses the primary observation of sensation of her cervical mucus to determine her fertility. Four simple rules are applied within the woman’s cycle – three prior to ovulation and the fourth once the fertile phase has ended. These rules are applied based on a couple’s desire to achieve or postpone pregnancy.
