Accomplishments
Health Education and Billings Teaching, Mexico 2015
Ambereen Ahmed went with Helping Hands Medical Missions to Tlaltenango, Zacatecas, Mexico to educate couples and women about their bodies, sexual health and, for those who were interested, the Billings Ovulation Method.
FABM Clinical Research Project 2014-2015
A clinical survey gauging knowledge and interest in FABMs was administered to women at the St. Paul Clinic and the Maple Clinic over a period of several months. Both English and Spanish versions of the surveys were converted to electronic forms to be administered on iPads by trained volunteers. An abstract entitled 'A Student-Run Research Project: Utilizing Technology for Clinical Surveys' was submitted and accepted for poster presentation at the JPS Research Day conference in Fort Worth, Texas.
White Rose 2014
White Rose is a center that helps women who have an unplanned pregnancy. We gave the basic presentation that we have that discusses some anatomy and physiology, why charting is important, and the different methods of charting. Even though most women were pregnant during the time of the presentation, we hope that this information will be useful to them in the future. Most women were very responsive and some had heard of the Billings Ovulation Method beforehand.
Birthchoice 2014
Vincent Zimmern gave two talks to couples and families at Birthchoice. The first was on the Billings method and the second was on pediatric development in the 0-2 age range. Families and couples at Birthchoice really enjoy having medical students teach them about fertility and child development and he definitely encourages others to participate.
Center of Hope 2014
Billings Trained Teachers 2014
In this three day session, we had six students trained in the Billings Ovulation Method. This training is a very good step towards being able to teach the general public about fertility awareness. Even though it covers only one of the many methods, it is a very fundamental method that is applicable to people of any social status.
Elective Series 2014-2015
The 2014-2015 FACTS lecture series was a huge success in terms of educating UTSW medical students about fertility awareness based methods and their applications to women's health. We had medical school students of all years, physician assistant students, graduate students, and employees of UTSW in attendance. Students were able to attend a total of 14 lectures given by medical professionals and other experts in the various fertility awareness based methods. Lectures included introductions to five commonly practiced FABMs in addition to topics such as FABMs in Global Health, an FABM Users Panel, and the use of FABMs in diagnosing infertility and miscarriage to name a few. A total of 77 students attended one or more lectures and were able to learn about some aspect of this wonderful asset to women's health.
